Snorkeling with the Fish in paradise and visiting their world in the crystal clear waters off Hawaii and usually bathtub temperatures you are swimming in with no need for wet or dry suits so you don't get hypothermia. However, if you go SCUBA diving underwater below about 20 to 30 feet it still gets cold and then you are going to need wet or dry suits to not get hypothermia. You don't want to get hypothermia because then you start hallucinating which underwater usually just means you die from not being able to think clearly. The same thing can happen at altitude which also claims many mountain climbers along with altitude sickness.
What don't I like about Hawaii?
I don't like it when it's so hot and humid that it gives me problems and I can't think straight enough to make good decisions. When you get above even 80 or 85 degrees or if you are in direct sunlight I have to always be monitoring myself so I don't get close to passing out from the combination of humidity and heat. So, if you are from another climate really take it easy the first few days you are here. This is much less of a potential problem if you are coming to any of the Hawaiian Islands between December and the end of March when it is much cooler and the lows might get down to 60 to 65 degrees which means the highs are usually around 75 to 78 degrees or lower. Whereas right now the lows are around 75 or 76 degrees with the highs around 85 or 86 so I have to be careful if I'm not in an air conditioned car or hotel room. But, if I'm in the ocean snorkeling I'm fine as long as I'm watching for rocks, coral, and any fish that might be dangerous.
I found out a new fish to be careful of: needlefish
Normally, they are not going to bother you. But, their nose is as sharp as a hypodermic syringe so if you are flailing about they might go right through your arm or leg. I was swimming through a whole school of needlefish before someone told me this. The ones you have to watch out for and not freak out around are the ones under 10 inches long to 6 inches long. They are not going to drive themselves into and through your arms. You would have to do that yourselves by flailing. So, don't flail about when snorkeling in Hawaii. Most places don't want you to feed fish frozen peas either because especially parrot fish that eat coral have taken people's fingers off in a feeding frenzy. So, remember these fish are wild but parrotfish and needlefish are not to be trifled with. Damselfish are territorial to and might bite you if they feel threatened. So, it is their world not yours. You are in a wild place with the fish. And remember the fish are there because further out deeper there are sharks too. The fish try to stay protected from being eaten by sharks and so should you unless you are wearing underwater stainless steel chain mail or something like that that a shark can't bite through. And even then being around sharks bigger than I am I think is kind of nuts myself, especially some particular breeds like Great Whites. pictures of small and large needle fish. So, if you see a school of needlefish be sure not to flail around or panic around them. slow sure confident moves are best while snorkeling to avoid all kinds of injuries while looking carefully and recognizing the behaviors of fish you are around. This way you and they stay safe for your next snorkel adventure in the Hawaiian Islands. And if you get cut by coral be sure to wash out the wound and apply neosporin or polysporin. Before these two ointments people had often open sores of Staph wounds that would only get bigger for awhile. So, remember these two ointments to prevent infections from wounds here in Hawaii from the ocean corals.
