When we bought our home around 2000 we wanted it to be above where tsunamis often hit on the Pacific Rim because of earthquakes.
For example, 250,000 people died in the 2004 december earthquake in Indonesia, Thailand and Ceylon and killed people other places too.
Then the 2011 tsunami and earthquake killed between 15,000 to 30,000 people in Japan especially near the Fukushima Nuclear power plant that will be spewing radiation into the sea because of three meltdowns for around 50,000 years or more ongoing because one of them was reprocessing weapons grade plutonium there.
So, when we bought our home we remember various tsunamis that have hit the Pacific rim and made it a point to buy a home over 100 feet in elevation to avoid being washed away in a future earthquake caused tsunami. A friend of mine watched many people die in Hawaii in the 1960s from a tsunami hitting there by the way likely caused by an earthquake then too.
So, anywhere on the pacific rim you have to think about tsunamis because it isn't IF it is only When the next tsunami hits anywhere on the pacific ocean shores. But, I suppose if you aren't worried you just get into your car and drive to higher ground and watch your home wash away (if you are notified in time and it isn't 2 am to 5 am in the morning when it happens on a weekend.)
