If you remember history neither of them were re-elected. Based upon his present approval ratings he might not be re-elected either. The highest his approval rating as president has gotten has been 43 % throughout his presidency and this likely is not enough to create a re-election of Trump. Carter had 43% approval his re-election year about now like Trump at his highest point of approval and Bush I at this point in his re-election year only had 41%. And once again neither Carter nor Bush I were re-elected for a 2nd term so likely Trump won't be re-elected either given these statistics.
However, there is another way to look at this too. When Reagan was elected he was a fairly popular president so we re-elected for a 2nd term even with Alzheimers which was hidden from the public so basically Nancy ran the government and used Reagan as a mouthpiece the last 2 to 4 years in office.
Then Bush I went in but because there had already been a Republican president for 8 years before Bush, Bush lost his 2nd term to Clinton. Then Clinton was a very popular president and served two years.
The point I'm making is that though a Democrat will likely be the next president that it might be possible that another Republican might be president for 1 term after 1 term of a Democratic president before there is another 2 term Democratic President given historical ways things tend to work in this country.
The country tends to prefer one Good 8 years with a Democratic President followed by another Good 8 years with a Republican president. But, if the candidates aren't acceptable to the general public for any reason whether it is the candidate or world circumstances or both then things get thrown off this cycle.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
