IF you are coming up today you might want to expect an extra hour or two if you are heading north from Redding on Interstate 5 through Lakehead because Lakehead (on part of the Shasta lake and Dam) is on fire. As we went about 1 to 2 miles per hour average over two hours from the first bridge that crosses the lake until Lakehead the fire is just before Lakehead. On top of this there is a second fire called the Lava fire that has burned up almost to Whitney Glacier on the Weed Side of the mt. Shasta and come within 4 miles of the city of Mt. Shasta between Black Butte and the Shastina Side of Mt. Shasta. So, the smoke in Mt. Shasta is coming and going depending upon the weather and wind directions. So, heading north from Redding you have to literally drive through one place on fire heading north and then you have to deal with two smoke situations one near Lakehead and one that has closed Highway 97 from Weed East because of the Lava fire. I think you can still drive into Weed but you can't drive East of Weed on 97.
So, it took us about 2 hours longer than usual to get to Mt. Shasta city from the SF Bay area in California.
