My point of view after having experienced myself is that often some extremely traumatic event changes a person's life forever as a child or young adult or adult.
When I studied Cultural Anthropology at Palomar College I can still remember the definition of a "Natural Shaman" in 1971. Palomar College is located in San Marcos, California.
And it is likely much different than most of you think.
It is a completely experiential and not necessarily an intellectual point of view if you define it the way my Cultural Anthropology text defined it then.
The definition went something like this: "A natural shaman has psychologically died but his or her body still lives. So, they live in both the world of the living and the world of the dead at the same time."
How is this possible?
I suppose you could view this sort of like an extreme trauma or PTSD that maybe someone like Saint FRancis of Asisi experienced which eventually caused him to start the Catholic Franciscan brotherhood in Italy hundreds of years ago. He was in battle as a knight for his city and got extreme PTSD but also survived and became a natural shaman. They depict this quite well in:
