The New York attorney general's lawyers asked Cohen in follow up questions to clarify his response. Cohen said that Trump never directly asked to inflate the numbers, but that what he wanted was known, because he spoke like “a mob boss.”

This has been something to watch with Trump always lying and speaking like a Mob boss not only to Cohen who used to be Trump's Fix it lawyer but also to everyone around him like Weisselberg his Tax Accountant. By doing this he could avoid legal problems by not being direct about what he was asking Cohen and Weisselberg to do. This was likely Trump's thinking always.
By speaking like a mob boss he was thinking he could avoid future legal penalties for his always illegal actions ongoing. So, maybe the best way to think of Trump is that he actually was and is a "Mob Boss?"
