The Park Fire ignited in Chico’s Bidwell Park on Wednesday and moved northward, tearing across a vast area of wilderness that’s highly flammable and parched after the two-week California heat wave at the start of July. The fire is the sixth largest in California’s history. A total of 109 structures have been destroyed and five damaged by the fire, according to Cal Fire’s latest Monday report. Over 4,000 structures remain threatened.
In the days after it started, the fire exploded amid gusty, hot, dry weather, and the blaze grew 70,000 to 100,000 acres a day. Growth finally stalled over the weekend; since Saturday night, it has gained less than 20,000 acres.
