The Liberty ships were the first ships built in the U.S. primarily by welding pieces of metal together

This greatly speeded up the assembly of these ships because before this I think rivets were used. However, from my point of view welding might seal a ship better from leaking water than rivets but they must have had some kind of way to keep out the water when they riveted metal ships together too before they started welding ships together.
