waiianapanapa is a good place to snorkel and it is amazing to see so much black volcanic rock and black volcanic caves and even a black sand beach there too. However, to snorkel in the little bay there you need basically perfect weather so the waves aren't crashing or the surf isn't so chewed up you cannot see anything underwater in the little cove there.
One time my family and I had all been snorkeling and ominous rain clouds came and suddenly the rain drops were as big as the tips of your fingers and so in about 10 seconds you were completely wet like you were taking a shower or something. Then because we all were wearing bathing suits walking to our rental car we all began to laugh because we realized we weren't wearing anything that would be ruined in the rain because all we had on was bathing suits and beach walkers and masks and snorkels and such. So, we just stood there and laughed at how funny it was to be in this situation in the warm rain like a warm shower coming down on top of us all then.
Though I have been there many times over the years since 1989 when I first moved to Hana Maui from Santa Cruz, California there have only been a few times when the cove was perfect for snorkeling. But, when it is it is a wonderful place to snorkel because when I was there at least the fish were amazing to watch underwater there.
