Sep 25, 2012 – A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Mexico's Baja Peninsula Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

When there is a large quake in the western hemisphere like the 7.1 in Colombia many of the plates in north and south america have to make adjustments like the quakes in Mexico and even Maine as well as minor quakes in California and other places. So, for several months or even years plates all over have to adjust to different large moves on connected tectonic plates.

In March 2011 the large quake in Japan also affected tectonic plates here in the western U.S. for example and adjustments have had to continue to occur over the past couple of years in  plates connected to the Fukushima area of Japan. This likely is true of plates into Southeast Asia and China as well as aftershocks from that quake continue to occur even today in Japan.
