As I'm reading "Race Against the Machine" my thought is that it's premise could be thought of as: "Don't compete with machines, learn to work in harmony with them so you still have a job". So, knowing Technology will be your competition now and in the future your survival depends upon being in harmony with machines if you wish to have a job and a livelihood. This likely is the single most important thing people need to know regarding Technology both now and into the future.
Another way said, "Technology is your competition" and knowing you just can't compete on it's own terms and win. Just like the legend of John Henry driving those stakes into the railroad tracks until he died from exhaustion against a train engine like pile driver, human beings simply will not be able to compete with technology on it's own terms. Technology will always be faster, more efficient and much dumber and sillier in some ways than any human. But, if you don't respect technology for what it actually is, you soon could be dead from starvation or homelessness (from being without any job in your field).
So, maybe understanding technology is the key to actually having a career in anything. If you know what it can do then you know what you can do in harmony with it or in addition to it. In this way you might always have a job or a career as long as you want one.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
