We are going to southern California for a funeral soon to give solace to my wife's stepfather whose girlfriend died recently very quickly over 3 months. She was driving him everywhere up to about 2 months ago. But 3 months ago was hit from behind in her car and had some kind of aneurism and so went away first mentally and then into a coma and then she was gone within 3 months. When I saw her last 2 months ago she seemed fine but thought "I looked different" than she remembered me. So, I guess this was a sign she was on her way out that no one understood at the time as brain cells shut down.
So, even though she was 80 and had a long life and has been my wife's stepfather's girlfriend since about 1999 when his wife (my wife's mother died) he is now 95 and still coherent and going strong if with a cane and a pacemaker now. His biological children have gathered around him sheltering him from the storm so he appears to be okay as my wife was allowed to talk to him this week as they are worried about him (naturally). So, this will be goodbye to his girlfriend and giving solace to the only father my wife has left (her stepfather).
