The Russian Stock Market has been failing as of late. The predictions about Russian oil wells running out of oil by 2050 to 2080 are true. And the price of oil is falling steadily because of Canadian and American Shale oil processing and fracking. And Fracking is catching on regarding shale oil worldwide as well. So, oil prices might continue to drop even as solar is becoming competitive to oil more and more around the world as a primary energy source. It is already true that Solar is more competitive than any other source of energy in China, India and California. And as solar becomes infinitely more efficient (just like the microchip in the 1980s and 1990s) it will outcompete oil (and everything else) worldwide soon.
So, Russia's economic future at present is bleak mostly because of internal corruption in the Russian State and economy. A corrupt economy cannot ever compete with a truly free one (not for long) (as witness what happened to the Soviet Union).
So, maybe Putin feels he has no other choice but to invade other countries in his sphere of influence to regain the stature of the Russia of the 20th Century once again?
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
