In the 1950s maybe it was World War II and the Great Depression and because everyone literally had PTSD from both of those. But, never the less so many many people worked themselves to death. I remember how many people I knew were dead by 29, 39 or 49 then. Also, if something was wrong with them they didn't go to the doctors and often died. It was that so many people had not been to college then and were afraid of doctors. The other side of this was that many doctors did crazy things like say, "Cigarettes are safe" and then you saw the doctor getting drunk and smoking cigarettes a lot then too and doing all sorts of other things that often killed doctors by 40 or 50 too by the way.
So, I guess what I'm saying was the number one thing this taught me was to calm down and think about the consequences of literally everything I was doing because I saw so many people die young that didn't have to (at least to my way of thinking).
It was like they were all lemmings jumping off of cliffs into the water and so anxious to swim out to sea and drown.
This was my experience of all this growing up that people were sort of crazy trying to kill themselves by overwork. And they did by the hundreds and thousands.
In the 1950s the health of the average person 40 or 50 was like most 70 or 80 year olds now. It was really crazy. People ate steak and potatoes and then went to sleep right after this and were dead by 35 to 50. I saw this every day! It was steak and potatoes and then a carton of cigarettes with a 6 pack of beer and then they were dead! This was life in the 1950s from the perspective of a 5 to 12 year old which was me.
So, have compassion for yourselves if you want to live a long life. I'm just tired of everyone I know dying so young.
Have enough compassion for yourselves and your kids that you are smart enough to live a healthy long life!
