Hollywood couples tend not to last more than a couple years at best.
For Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, they have proved the exception to the
rule. Their love story has endured through decades and recently reached
an unexpected peak.
The Power Couple
For 34 years, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have spent their lives
together. Although they have never tied the knot, many people were
surprised when they made this recent announcement about their marriage
plans. This new development has changed everything regarding their time
together.
Trying Times
Goldie Hawn will be the first to admit that making a relationship last is difficult. In an interview with
People Magazine
the star was quoted as saying, “Monogamy is a very tough order. You’re
in the prime of your life, you are attracted to other people,
potentially, you have fantasies about that.” However, the couple has
managed to survive media scrutiny and desire.
How Did It Start?
When Goldie and Kurt met, it was not love at first sight. They had their official introduction on the set of
The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, a
1968 film. The film came early into both of their careers. Russell only
had three other film credits to his name. For Hawn, the film was a
milestone as she made her first appearance in a feature film.
Age Mattered
Their time on set together was nice, but their future together was
far from beginning. They hit it off as Kurt was a charming young man,
but their relationship would end after filming. Goldie recalled, “I
thought he was adorable, but he was much too young,” in an interview
with the BBC. At the time, Goldie was barely legal to drink at 21, but
Kurt was barely old enough to drive a car at 16. At that point in their
lives, the age gap was too great to overcome.
The Breakout Star
With their first encounter behind them, Kurt and Goldie moved on with
their lives to build their separate film careers. Only a year after
The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, Hawn won an Academy Award for Supporting Actress for her role in
Cactus Flower.
Her career took off, and she became a bankable star within the
industry. Audiences loved her comedic acting and craved her films. She
earned another Oscar nomination for her role in
Private Benjamin.
A Honky Tonk Woman
Goldie could do what she wanted in the 1970s. She hosted two television specials,
Pure Goldie (1971) and
The Goldie Hawn Special
(1978), reaching back to her roots in comedy. Everyone was willing to
throw money around to bring Goldie Hawn in. In 1972, she signed a record
deal with Warner Brothers to produce a country record.
Goldie
is her only full-length album and has received modest reviews. She
recorded the album with the help of country legends Dolly Parton and
Buck Owens, and covered a Bob Dylan song.
The Action Hero
The road was not as easy for the young Russell. He worked through bit
parts in television and film until earning an Emmy nomination for the
made-for-VT movie
Elvis, in which he played the King. His fame
exploded after playing anti-hero Snake Plissken in John Carpenter’s
dystopian action film
Escape From New York and its sequel
Escape from Los Angeles. Russell and Carpenter would work together again in alien horror film
The Thing. The film was panned initially but is now favorably regarded.
Walt Disney’s Premonition
Kurt is part of an unknown mystery with Walt Disney. Before he died
in 1966, Walt Disney’s last written words were “Kurt Russell.” Before he
donned his famous eye patch and before he met Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell
was a child actor for Walt Disney Studios. He had signed a long term
contract with the studio to appear in films. We can only assume that
this was the famous filmmaker’s way of predicting his rise to fame.
Baseball or Acting?
Kurt Russell didn’t know whether to pursue his acting career or
follow his dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. He decided
to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the minor leagues. He
played second base in the California Angels’ farm system, rising to
class AA in 1973. He was leading the league in batting with a .563
average but tore his rotator cuff turning a double play. Instead of
playing at a lower level, he went back to acting.
Two Separate Lives
With their professional lives taking shape independent from one
another, they began to develop separate personal lives as well. In 1969,
Hawn married dancer Gus Trikonis, a relationship that would only last
seven years. Not long after her divorce, Hawn remarried and wed musician
Bill Hudson of the Hudson Brothers with whom she had Oliver and Kate
Hudson. Russell married Season Hubley, his on screen wife while filming
Elvis, and the couple had a son, Boston.
Matrimony No More
Kurt was married to Hubley for four years. The pair met on the set of
Elvis, but
their marriage ended in divorce in 1983. Hawn, who met and got engaged
to Hudson while she was still married to (but separated from) Trikonis,
would not have much luck with her marriage either. Bill Hudson filed for
divorce on August 15, 1980. This left the door open for both stars to
find their perfect match. Little did they know that they were meant to
be.
Fate Brings Them Together
In 1983, at an audition for the film
Swing Shift, Goldie
Hawn and Kurt Russell would find themselves in the same place yet again.
It had been years since they had last seen each other and Russell was
blown away by Goldie. However, after a night of heavy drinking had left
him hungover, he struggled to put words together. As a guest on
Conan, Russell admitted his opening pick up line was “Man, you’ve got a great figure.”
A First Date To Remember
Astonishingly, Kurt’s ill-conceived pickup line worked. They went to a
movie together but decided to take the party to a club for some swing
dancing. The night was one to remember as the police got involved. After
the club, they went back to a house that Hawn had just purchased. Hawn
did not have a key, so they had to break in. As they were fooling
around, the cops busted in thinking the place was being robbed – a truly
memorable first date.
A Family United
Three years after their relationship began, Goldie became pregnant.
Wyatt Russell was born on July 10, 1986. He would enter the world to a
slew of half-siblings. Hawn had two children with Bill Hudson, and
Russell had one with Season Hubley. They would become loving step
parents to each other kids. Kate Hudson looks to Kurt as a real father
figure in her life. Wyatt is also an actor appearing films such as
Everybody Wants Some! and
22 Jump Street.
Kate Hudson’s Fame
There’s no denying that Kate Hudson and mom Goldie are extremely
close. Goldie raised an incredibly intelligent woman in Kate, who was
gone on to be a star in her own right. She has acted in several
blockbuster movies. Who can forget Kate’s hilarious performance in
How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days as well as the romantic comedies
Raising Helen and
My Best Friends’ Girl. Kate has even opened a fitness company showing that her talents are endless, much like her famous Mom.
Breakthrough Role
Growing up in the shadow of two film legends could be daunting. As a
young actress, Kate tried to distance herself from her parents and make a
career off her own name. After a few smaller roles, Kate broke out as a
major player with her performance as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s
award-winning
Almost Famous. Kate earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress as a groupie, or “band-aid,” for the fictional band Stillwater.
Kate And Kurt Russell
While many children can struggle accepting step parents, luckily this
hasn’t been the case for Kate. In fact, she regards Kurt as her
biological father. She has been quite vocal in the critique of her
natural father, Bill Hudson. Kate has said that Bill has no idea who she
is and that Kurt is her real father. Kurt raised Kate from when she was
just 18 months old, so it makes sense that the two have an extremely
close relationship.
Kate And Oliver’s Relationship With Bill
Kate also has a brother, Oliver Hudson. The siblings have both been
vocal and spoken out about how they attempted to reach out to their
biological father, Bill Hudson but to no avail. Kate and Oliver are
known to be extremely close and decided to try and make contact with
Bill, however neither of them received any sort of response which was
difficult for them to process. However, Kurt was there for the both Kate
and Oliver. Indeed, he even mentored them through that time.
The Absent Father Speaks
In 2015, Oliver Hudson posted a harsh Instagram critique of his
father, Bill. “Happy abandonment day,” the Father’s Day post read. Bill
Hudson told his side of the story to
The Daily Mail. He claims
that Goldie “poisoned” them against him. After his divorce he attempted
to stay close to the kids, but Goldie began to pull them away when Kurt
entered the picture. He says he tried, but Oliver’s post was “the last
straw” and he wants nothing to do with them.
Kate And Goldie’s Relationship
Although mother and daughter relationships can be difficult at times,
Goldie and Kate are very close. Kate credits most of her success to her
mother, who she believes set an example for her. Kate has said that
everything valuable in life that she was taught has come from Goldie.
This mother and daughter duo are incredibly supportive of one another
and it doesn’t look set to change any time soon!
Wyatt Is A Budding Star
Kurt and Goldie’s son Wyatt is the most recent of their off-spring to
join the acting ranks. As a dead-on ringer for a young Kurt Russell,
Wyatt starred in the ensemble cast of college baseball/party film
Everybody Wants Some!!.
Before he started acting, he was a professional hockey player, which
helped inform his role as a partying athlete. His parents gave him some
straight forward advice on acting: “be on time, know your lines, and be a
nice guy.”
Goldie’s A Grandmother
As time has moved on Goldie and Kurt’s children have grown up and in
turn began raising families of their own. Kate has two children, one
with ex-husband Chris Robinson and another child with Matt Bellamy.
Sadly, neither of Kate’s marriages lasted, however we hope that she
finds love really soon! Oliver Hudson, Kate’s brother, also has three
children. We think that Goldie and Kurt must have their hands full when
their grandchildren come to visit!
Raising Families
Although Goldie raised Kate and Oliver as Jewish, the entire
Hawn-Russell clan are very much into meditation. The family also
practice Buddhism. Kate Hudson has commented that meditation calms her
and has changed her life entirely. She meditates for nearly half an hour
in the morning, as well as the afternoon. Goldie’s son, Oliver, also
practices meditation and Buddhism. In fact when he married his wife
Erinn, the ceremony was officiated by a Buddhist monk.
Living Together and Working Together
After reconnecting on the set of
Swing Shift, Hawn and
Russell put their relationship to the test not only at home but on
screen. Their chemistry was undeniable in the film as well as in person,
and audiences ate it up.
Swing Shift did not make back its production costs, but their next film together,
Overboard,
was considered a success and made $27 million at the box office. They
have not appeared together since, but Russell has mentioned the
possibility.
Get Rid Of The Wedding Bells
Goldie and Kurt have been going strong for 34 years now but curiously
have never gotten married. The lifelong partners do not seem too
interested in a celebration of their love either. Hawn once asked in an
interview, “What is marriage going to do for us?” Apparently, their kids
don’t think they should wed either. With the idea of marriage long
abandoned, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were recipients of another
celebration, one too special and perfect for the couple.
Staying Together Sans Wedding Vows
Some couples might struggle to stay together without the finality of a wedding. In an interview with
Vanity Fair,
Goldie detailed how avoiding marriage has kept them together. She said
that she would have been “long divorced” if they had gotten married. She
believes that “there’s something psychological about not being married
because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other.
For me, I chose to stay. Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice.”
A House Together Yet Divided
Their healthy and happy relationship is built on years of trust and
support. For them, supporting each other comes more from encouraging
each other to do what makes them happy. This concept is literally built
into their new house. Goldie and Kurt designed his and her wings in
their million-dollar home. Goldie’s wing includes floor-to-ceiling
windows and spaces for meditation and yoga. Kurt’s man cave focuses on
his interests such as hunting.
A Walk To Remember
The dynamic duo received the celebration of a lifetime, literally, on
May 4, 2017. Hawn and Russell walked hand in hand down a Hollywood
Boulevard red carpet to celebrate their careers. They received their own
stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Unlike the many stars that had
earned their place on the Walk before them, Hawn and Russell had their
stars placed side-by-side signifying not only their illustrious careers
but also their eternal love for one another.
Guest List Of Famous Faces
Without a wedding in the future, the couple’s star ceremony acted as a
de facto wedding bash. Plenty of familiar faces peppered the crowd of
A-list guests in attendance.
Big Little Lies star Reese Witherspoon and director Quentin Tarantino were in attendance. Russell has acted in two Tarantino films,
Death Proof and most recently
The Hateful Eight. Of course, the stellar Kate Hudson honored her mother and stepfather with a moving speech.
Kate’s Speech
Kate’s speech garnered tears from her mother as she celebrated her
life as an actress and mother. Hudson joked that “I always thought I’d
be talking about them at like a wedding or something. But since a
wedding doesn’t seem to be in our near future, ever, this may be my only
opportunity.” It might not have been a wedding, but had the feeling of a
wedding party speech. Hudson emphasized how Goldie refused to fail as a
mother.
Goldie’s Wedding Sense Of Humor
After all these years together without a wedding date, Goldie has
developed quite the sense of humor for the topic. As she approached the
podium, she echoed some of Kate’s talking points. She greeted the
audience by saying, “Did we just get married?” Goldie squashed any
speculation of a wedding and followed it up with “We’ve never had a
celebration like this before, but I’m not going to pop the question.”
It Was A Good Year
A Hollywood Walk of Fame star is not the only thing Hawn is
celebrating in 2017 (no, it’s not an engagement). A week after the
ceremony, Hawn’s movie
Snatched premiered.
Snatched is
her first film appearance in 15 years and co-stars comedian Amy
Schumer. As she spoke at the podium, Hawn recalled her humble beginnings
before becoming a full fledged star and how her parents could never
believe she would lead the life she made for herself.
He Had A Good Year Too
Russell has also enjoyed quite a nice 2017. On top of receiving his star, his two most recent films,
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and
Fate of the Furious
are two of the biggest films of the year, grossing over $2 billion
combined at the box office. The lovebirds wowed the ceremony crowd with
an impassioned kiss on the red carpet in front of their stars. When Kurt
stepped to the podium, all he could do was gush about his other half.
A Good Year For All
In fact it isn’t just Goldie and Kurt that
have had continued success this year. Their children have also been
fairly busy! Kate and Oliver have both been acting. Following the
success of her book, Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body, Kate has also been filming Marshall alongside, Chadwick Boseman. The film is due for release later on this year.
A Family Business
It’s no secret of the close relationship between the offspring of
Goldie and Kurt. In fact Kate and Oliver have gone into business with
each other. Kate announced that Oliver would join her fitness company.
Oliver designs and manages the mens activewear division of the company –
FL2. The company was launched in 2015 and continues to go from strength
to strength. The company gives the duo the ability to combine their
love for fashion and fitness.
Family Is Everything
Family is everything for the Hawn/Russell clan. The offspring of
Goldie and Kurt appreciate their long standing relationship very much.
Even though their children would love nothing more for them than to get
married, they appreciate having such a strong couple to look up to.
Goldie and Kurt provide their children with an example of everlasting
love and appreciation.
Everlasting Love
Although Goldie and Kurt have had their ups and downs since they met
all those years ago, it is clear that this couple have escaped the
Hollywood curse. Today Goldie and Kurt have a bond that is stronger than
ever. Perhaps it is because they have not put the pressure on
themselves to get married. Their friends and family know that their love
is sure to last forever.
The Perfect Words
Although a sixteen year old Russell was too young for her, and he had
few words for her the next time they met, Russell knew exactly what to
say to his love. “To you, I owe my wonderful life,” he began. “Simply
put Goldie, I cherish you. All of the stars in the sky or the boulevard
don’t hold a candle to that. There’s no one else I’d rather be next to
than Goldie Hawn.”
People Still Love Them
Three and a half decades into their relationship, fans cannot get
enough of them. The nostalgia machine is currently working to produce a
remake of their 1987 classic film,
Overboard. However, unlike the original, star Anna Faris will not work opposite her real life husband, Chris Pratt (Russell’s
Guardians
co-star) and will appear with Eugenio Derbez in Russell’s role. While
Russell and Hawn may never appear in a film together again, we can
always hold out hope for this Hollywood match made in heaven.
My Boy Boston
Wyatt Russell is becoming a recognized name due to his blossoming
acting career. But not many know that Kurt also had a kid in his first
marriage. Boston Russell was used to living in the shadow of his famous
family from day one. However, unlike many of his family members, Boston
isn’t an actor. This doesn’t mean though that he hasn’t been involved in
the entertainment industry. He worked on the movie
Executive Decision and also make a cameo on the TV show
60 minutes.
Kurt’s Way
Unlike Goldie, Kurt Russell has very defined political beliefs. He is
in fact, a Libertarian. This was confirmed in 1996, when he gave an
interview with the
Toronto Sun. “I was brought up as
a Republican,” he said. “But when I realized that at the end of the day
there wasn’t much difference between a Democrat and Republican, I became
a Libertarian.” As you can see, his views have changed with time, but
this was purely after growing up and becoming independent.
Going North
When Wyatt was growing up, he was an avid hockey fan and loved to
play. However, Southern California wasn’t the ideal place to be if one
wished to pursue a career playing the sport. So Kurt and Goldie
eventually helped their son and moved with him up to Vancouver, British
Colombia. “There’s hockey in Los Angeles but up here, it’s their
church,” Kurt said. “We wanted to be with him for the last years of his
high school life.”
Giving Goldie
It turns out that Goldie Hawn is actually a very charitable person.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as she has many children and
grandchildren to take care of. But in 2003, Hawn decided to branch out
to the wider community and founded the Hawn Foundation. This non-profit
organization has a strong focus on education, creating academic programs
along with activities that provide “life-enhancing strategies for
well-being.” Also, the Hawn Foundation aims to support research studies
that evaluate educational progams, in general.
Wings Of Hope
Kurt Russel is also a charitable individual, being an Honorary Board
Member of the humanitarian organization Wings of Hope. A fan of the
organization, Russell sees the importance of helping others become
self-sufficient. This aviation charity sets out to improve communities
throughout the globe. This is done through a focus on health, work,
education, and food. Other celebrities who are honorary board members of
Wings Of Hope include Harrison Ford and former astronaut Thomas P.
Stafford.
