- This was inspired by my reading of "Alas Babylon" in when I was 12 to 14 years of age. Even now this book scares the hell out of a person who lived through the Cold War like I did. So, EMP is a more modern story of how an EMP affects a neighborhood and the families there in California on the coast. Alas Babylon was written by Pat Frank in 1959.
