When you jump out of a plane to fight fires(in the 1970s) with a parachute you have to be prepared for hitting trees on the way down so usually you have heavy gear on to protect you and something covering your face as you go through the branches of trees. Where there are fires often there is no open ground to land in so you just hit trees in your gear with a parachute then. Now people might have paragliders which have more control but possibly in fires you have the same problem of no open ground to land in near a fire often too.
