The earthquake in Japan on March 11th 2011 was the fourth-largest on record (since 1900) and the largest in Japan's History.
It killed 18,000 to 20,000 people outright, made 100,000 or more homeless (many of whom are still homeless today), made many people's land permanently uninhabitable (at least in their lifetimes if not their children's lifetimes too).
One of the tidal waves hit Fukushima Nuclear power plant which had 3 reactors that eventually melted down from this problem. One of these reactors was reprocessing Nuclear weapons grade Plutonium. Because of this it is quite possible that radioactive water will continue to go into the ocean through the water table and out to sea for the next 25,000 to 50,000 years because there may be no way that humans can presently think of to permanently stop it.
Here is more information that I obtained from last night's PBS NEWSHOUR regarding what is being done today all these years later to try to lessen this problem. Ending this problem is actually not possible yet:
