They were the ones who mostly defended Tibet from the Chinese with Rifles on Horseback with rifles but were no match for machine guns and cannons and aircraft and tanks.
When I went to Bodhgaya there were many young Khampa men there for the Kalachakra Tantra of Tibetan Buddhism with the Dalai Lama and 500,000 people there. They had two long braids of hair with red ribbons on them (the young ones) which was amazing to see for someone like myself from California and they always carried knives to defend themselves. But, you could see from their attitudes that they were very macho and proud also. This is just a part of the Khampa Tradition coming from Kham, Tibet.
