I asked Google AI: "What is an IP Address?"

I have known what an IP Address was since the 1980s or early 1990s when they were first used a lot. The number they use below is only an example of what an IP Address can look like in 17.172.224.47

Your IP address for both your Iphone and your computer are likely different ones that look like this. so, if you have a website your website is linked often with your computer which has an IP address like this number above and below. I think when I was studying in the 1990s it seems like most IP addresses were more like .000.000.00  or three groupings instead of 4 so likely they are adding groupings of 2 or 3 digits between periods as needed to add more devices that can travel on the internet. Legally every device needs to have an IP address worldwide. However, I was taught to say 17 dot 172 dot 224 dot 47 when calling out an IP Address in the late 1990s. However, as you all know things change over time of how things are done and how they are referred to.

And these numbers would be stored in a binary form too so 17 would be 0b10001 in binary the way it would be stored on a computer since a computer only knows at core zeros and 1s.

And so if people program in numerical code it might be difficult for any human to easily decode it in real time. However, it is also possible to build something that could read machine language too to sort out what a computer or group of computers are doing.

All programming languages are reduced down into machine language (zeros and ones) for processing any information. So, programming languages are all invented to make it easier to use computers which might be impossible without these programming languages because of the complexity of numbers.

So, getting zeros and ones to represent decimal numbers and letters is the first step in all of this.

begin quote from Google AI and the internet:

Understanding IP Addresses: A Complete Guide to Internet Protocol
An IP address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network using the Internet Protocol for communication. It's like a digital house address, allowing devices on the internet or a local network to identify each other and communicate.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Function:
IP addresses have two main functions: identifying the network interface and providing the device's location within the network.

  • Structure:
An IP address is a string of numbers, separated by periods (IPv4) or colons (IPv6).

  • Types:
There are two main versions of IP addresses: IPv4 (192.168.1.1) and IPv6 (2620:cc:8000:1c82:544c:cc2e:f2fa:5a9b).

  • Importance:
IP addresses are essential for the internet to function, allowing data to be routed to the correct destination.

  • Allocation:
IP addresses are allocated by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

What is an IP address in simple terms?
    AI Overview
An IP address is like a unique postal address for devices on a network, including the internet. It's a numerical label assigned to each device, allowing it to be identified and communicated with. Without an IP address, devices couldn't send or receive data on a network.
    Here's a more detailed explanation:
    • What it is:
An IP address is a string of numbers (in the form of 123.45.67.89) that uniquely identifies a device on a network.

  • Why it's needed:
It's like a house address for your computer, phone, or any device connected to the internet. This address helps routers and other network devices know where to send data to reach the correct device.

  • How it works:
When you visit a website, your computer's IP address is used to route the request to the correct server, and then the website data is routed back to your computer.

  • Types of IP addresses:
    • Public IP: Assigned by your internet service provider (ISP) and is globally unique.

  • Private IP: Used within a local network (like your home network) and is not accessible from the public internet.

  • Versions:
The most common version is IPv4, but a new version, IPv6, is also in use. IPv6 uses a different format, with colons separating the numbers (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334).
