What happened in India???
I've recently become a Beatles fan in past few months. I've been listening to their records and I've watched the Get Back series and I've read and watched the Beatles Anthology. I've seen a lot on tiktok and YouTube comments recently people asking what happened in India (I think to do with Paul and John). And no one ever says what it is. It seems like a meme that nothing actually did happen. So did something actually happen or am I just falling for the joke??? 😅😅😅

A lot of stuff happened in India, but when people phrase it like that, they're talking about the speculation that John and Paul in particular had some kind of fight or falling out or... something that nobody really knows the details about. That mostly comes from Geoff Emerick (the Beatles' engineer) saying in his book that there was some kind of new tension between them when they got back from India to work on the White Album, and their friendship was never quite the same after that. And it's true that things did change, but whether that's due to some specific incident or just to the accumulated stress and chaos of their lives from late 1967 to mid 1968 (Brian Epstein dying, John getting divorced, Paul splitting with his fiancee, drugs, Apple, Yoko, etc), we have no real way of knowing. Yoko also stirred the pot a few years back by telling a biographer that John considered having an affair with Paul but Paul was too straight to go for it, so you can imagine that people's imaginations run a bit wild with that one and how it might have impacted the arc of their friendship, assuming Yoko wasn't just trolling (which I'm not sure is a thing you can assume).

The India trip happened immediately after Brian Epstein's death, which was the beginning of the end for the group in a lot of ways.
Then there was splintering with ringo not staying long because he didn't like the spicy food, john casting aspersions on the maharishi, Paul taking off earlier, George being fully committed to the meditation, as well as john writing and receiving letters from yoko whioe in india with his wife... Basically it was the first time of the Beatles starting to express serious individuality and a desire for independence. Before then it was basically all for one and one for all, but once Brian died there was a sudden lack of the unifying influence and they all started to sort of act out, in pretty small ways at first, but without their manager to keep them in check things started to change. Not to mention that the solo meditation days also lead to john and Paul writing a tonne of songs completely on their own instead of coming to each other for input.
