Bombogenesis Storms?

They were saying on NBC Nightly news tonight that the storm hitting the 

northeast is a bombogenesis storm which means I think a drop in 24 milibars

makes the storm explode in various ways.

The type of winter storm exploding across the Northeast has a name, and yes, it sounds like something dreamed up for a Hollywood blockbuster.

Call this wintry mix of intensifying wind and snow a “bombogenesis.”

A bomb-bo-what?

You won’t find the word in the dictionary, but it’s a term coined by meteorologists to describe an area of low pressure that “deepens rapidly,” creating a strong storm, or cyclone, that intensifies as it moves over the ocean, said Bob Oravec, a National Weather Service forecaster.

To have a bombogenesis situation, a cold air mass needs to meet a warmer one. That can happen over water or land, although the East Coast is a prime spot during the winter months when the cold arctic air clashes with the warmer Gulf Stream waters, Oravec said.

The barometric pressure drops, sending the winds into overdrive. Condensation clouds bring the snow or rain.

“Genesis refers to the generating (of the storm), while bomb means it’s an explosive growth,” Oravec added.

The storm, dropping about a foot of snow on some parts of the Northeast, will see winds intensify Tuesday evening into Wednesday — creating this bombogenesis event.

Oravec said there’s potential for a bombogenesis to occur every winter. In fact, he said, one hit over the waters off the East Coast when the polar vortex struck earlier this month.

• I think they got the year wrong and it is actually written  in 2015.
  
  Bombogenesis is similar on a smaller scale to what happened in "A Day After Tomorrow" where many storms at once become deadly snowstorms with hurricane and freezing results. Only in the movie if you got caught out in it you might freeze to death. This storm is supposed to raise ocean water levels 4 feet higher so wherever there is river or sea ice this might be a real problem for people "hunkering down in place" to survive the winds and freezing surf and tides coming in on high winds. Imagine if people were in low lying areas and ice or high water came into their homes along the coast and they just froze to death. This could be one of the problems people might have to deal with the next few days.
  
  In early December 2014 I skied at Timberline not to far from Portland Oregon with my older daughter and her boyfriend on snow boards while I was on skis. However, it was so cold (15 to 20 degrees) with up to 30 mph winds it was sort of dangerous for skiers and snowboarders because they couldn't really stop the ski lift to fix the problem. So, every 3rd or 4th chair the people were thrown off at the top. My chair was one of these. It was a bench so up to 4 people could ride with skis or snowboards so I was thrown up into the air and got injured and my daughter got slightly injured too. But, since her boyfriend can jump a snow board about 60 feet he found a way to land okay when the ice threw us into the air when we were supposed to get off the lift at the top.
  
  I guess what I'm saying here is that they couldn't stop the lift or skiers and snowboarders would freeze to death on the lift to fix it. It was better to injure a few people than to make 1000 or more people on the lift freeze to death waiting there on the lifts going up.
  
  The winds and sea surges combined at low temperatures during this Bombogenesis storm could combine the problems of a Hurricane Sandy with a wind chill factor combined with sea surges which might back up rivers and river ice as well as sea ice and cause problems. So, those near rivers, beaches,  or low lying places in this storm should beware of what is coming.
