If you look at the Pacific Ocean now, there is storm after storm lining up to hit California. And if California is hit really hard like it is starting to get hit now you can also expect everyone to the east of California to be hit pretty hard too.
The weather pattern that was bringing storms across Baja California and up through Mexico across Texas and the south and the whole Mississippi River Valley and Tributaries now is starting to hit California like this too.
Big Sur didn't get 3 inches last night. Intstead it got 2 1/2 inches of rain. However, the next two days could easily sever Hiway 1 in one or more places like if often does for weeks or months this time of year because of the cliff faces highway 1 is cut into often get washed away by rocks or mud or undermined by rain this time of year. I just learned the Santa Cruz Mountains just got 3 1/2 inches of rain since yesterday, so this next storm tonight and tomorrow might cause some problems because of the now saturated soils there.
Flash flooding is now expected during the next 2 days likely from the Northern California border all the way to Mexico at this point. So, as the storms keep hitting it could get pretty serious during the next two days to several weeks out. I'm not in a flood plain so likely I'm okay. But, often roads within 1/2 mile from me are 2 feet deep in this kind of weather when it goes on and on, especially if storm drains get clogged up with leaves or pine needles where I live. 2 to 4 feet of new snow is expected within the next 2 days for the Sierras too.
If you are backpacking there hopefully you have heard about this by now and have sought shelter of a better kind than a tent and also hopefully you have snow shoes, cross country metal edged skis and a GPS device that works so you know where you are.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
