Dall sheep (Ovis dalli) are
wild,
white-coated sheep native to the high, rugged mountain ranges of
northwestern North America, including Alaska, the Yukon, and British
Columbia. Adult rams weigh up to 300 pounds and feature massive,
curled amber horns, which males use in dramatic head-butting dominance
contests.
Habitat and Behavior
- Home: Alpine ridges, steep rocky slopes, and meadows that offer safe "escape terrain" from predators.
- Social Life: Rams live in bachelor groups, while ewes, lambs, and young rams live in separate maternal groups.
- Diet: Herbivores eating grasses, sedges, moss, lichens, and twigs from small shrubs.
- Threats: Wolves, grizzly bears, wolverines, coyotes, and golden eagles (which prey primarily on young lambs).
- Defense: They use their incredible agility to run up steep, rocky cliffs where heavier predators cannot follow.
