I was wondering this morning why houses are built north south east and west primarily worldwide?

 The main Reason at first when people did this is so the sun could come into the windows of the house in the morning and so they could see the sunset at night. It meant lighting was less of a problem at least during the day with light coming through the open windows. This would be before Glass was invented by melting dirt or sand into Glass on fires. But, this east and west facing house would be for the light of the sun during the day so candles didn't have to be burned all day long inside the house.

Also, I was wondering why houses are rectangular or square mostly and realized that it's because trees grow straight and when they started building log cabins way back it was more convenient to build them square or rectangular because of the natural shapes of trees being relatively straight vertically especially pine and fir trees. Now, At least in the U.S. we build mostly with Douglas Fir because it is the strongest but not heaviest wood to build with. Also, you can build with oak but it is very heavy and hard to cut but does make a nice floor which doesn't dent very easily if you drop something on it.

It also makes sense the way cities and roads are often built north south east or west too but this is a lot different with many more variables than building houses too. But, I think it all started out just trying to get enough light into the house or building to see with without having to burn candles or start a fire inside of the fireplace built of rocks and boulders then.
