I had been inspired by watching "Long way Round" with Ewan McGreggor who was obiwan kenobi in Star wars (the younger version) and his friend that starred in "The Emerald Forest" when he was young. So, they both basically rode their BMW dualsports around the world. I wanted a Thumper (single cylinder) just because it has instant response in the dirt when you need it in an instant avoiding obstacles and throwing your bike left or right between your knees avoiding things that you don't want to hit at slower speeds but still staying upright and moving.
So, it was between a BMW 650 dualsport 2009 and a KLR 650 dualsport 2009.
I was kind of disappointed that they don't come with kick starters anymore like I grew up with. But, the upside of this is it's not going to backfire and throw you over the handlebars or break your ankle or leg either while you kick start it. (I've been thrown over the handlebars of my old World War II BSA 500 built for the military and used in North AFrica during world war II by the way). But, that was in the late 1960s.
So, the reason I bought my KLR 650 by Kawasaki was that I found out that I could more easily get parts if I rode across Asia on my KLR 650 which was an option then. It's not now because I had a burst appendix and a hernia caused by the operation so that's not an option to ride that far now. However, I can still ride motorcycles just not long long distances. I just wear a weight training belt to protect my hernia from damage. But, I put the larger portion in the front rather than in the back to protect my hernia caused by the burst appendix and operation. I'm going skiing later this week and then I wear a weight training belt too so I don't explode if I fall with a hernia. I can also lift weights over my head even as long as I have a tight enough weight training belt on to hold everything together for strength.

This is exactly what my 2009 KLR 650 looks like by the way. A dualsport is usually configured with a bigger tire in front (for going over obstacles) and a smaller knobbie tire in back (not sure why they do this). I've said before I wouldn't recommend doing jumps with this at 388 pounds because it's hard to manage that much weight in the air because you are going to weigh likely much less than the bike.
In 1975 I bought a 1974 250 XL Honda dualsport that I jumped with the bottom of the rear tire 8 feet off the ground but that is a much lighter bike than this one.
I researched it and I think they are about 288 pounds or 100 pounds lighter than the KLR 650. I remember it was easy to throw the 250XL between my knees for quick turning in the dirt back in the late 1970s in the deserts of Southern California down dry washes then. Often there would be a rooster tail of sand shooting out behind you while you were dodging rocks and plants back in the late 1970s then. But, I hear all this has changed a lot now.
