As I was growing up everything seemed to be about religion in people I met. Part of this was that my parents from 1954 until 1960 were in charge of a church in Los Angeles while we lived first in Tujunga and then Glendale from 1954 to 1969. So, I was 21 years old before I left the Glendale Area for other places except for going away to a church school my senior year in High School where I graduated in 1966 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The basis for civilization has always been compassion (kindness) and friendship. People live together to help each other survive whatever comes in life.
So, understanding that without compassion and friendship and co-operation civilization completely ends for all of us.
So, it is in our mutual self interests and the survival of our species to try to support civilization to continue so people don't have to revert to going back to be animals again killing each other without limit like some gangs on earth do and always have.
So, governments are more about organizing for group survival more than anything else (Of course this is an ideal idea because all sorts of things happen in reality). But in the ideal which we should all strive for civilization allows us to continue to exist and have pretty good lives in a lot of the world (even though it is really awful many places on earth and always has been.
So, by learning compassion for yourself and all other beings you become an instrument of civilization itself and you work for the group good in this sense by being kind to yourself and everyone you meet to the best of your ability.
