August 13, 2019An ice cap-puccino
No, that's not a new frozen coffee drink from Starbucks; it's the southern polar ice cap on Mars. Mars is the only other planet in the solar system with visible ice caps, though they differ from Earth’s because the ice caps on Mars consist of both water ice and frozen carbon dioxide. The ice cap looks smooth here, but its surface is pockmarked with swiss-cheese-like depressions caused by the seasonal freezing and melting of the Martian winters and summers. While Mars has been observed by humanity for thousands of years, it was only on August 13, 1672, that Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens observed the ice cap using the most powerful telescope of the day. The giant of science designed the 50x magnification telescope himself, and with his brother, produced the lenses as well.Quote of the day

Martian polar ice caps - Wikipedia
The planet Mars has two permanent polar ice caps. During a pole's winter, it lies in continuous darkness, chilling the surface and causing the deposition of 25–30% of the atmosphere into slabs of CO2 ice. When the poles are again exposed to sunlight, the frozen CO2 sublimes. These seasonal actions transport large amounts of dust and water vapor, giving rise to Earth-like frost and large …Red Planet Heats Up: Ice Age Ending on Mars | Space
The north polar ice cap of Mars is seen in this mosaic view, which scientists made by combining data from the European Mars Express spacecraft and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The spiral features help scientists understand how ice ages on Mars work. (Image: © …Phoenix Mars Mission - Education - Mars 101 - Polar Regions
Like Earth, Mars has a North and South Pole. But while Earth's polar ice caps consist solely of water ice, Mars' polar caps are a combination of water ice and carbon dioxide ice. As the Martian seasons change, the carbon dioxide ice sublimates (vaporizes) in summer, revealing the surface, and freezes again in winter. As fall approaches, in each respective hemisphere, clouds begin to form over the …Mars' layered ice caps reveal its climate history ...
Mars' layered ice caps reveal its climate history Insulating blankets of sand layered atop ice sheets may have prevented the Red Planet from losing much more of its water into space.
