How'd we get here? (to present level of inflation)

How'd we get here?

Blame the pandemic. And Russia's war on Ukraine.
In the spring of 2020, as Covid-19 spread, it was like yanking the plug on the global economy. Factories around the world shut down; people stopped eating at restaurants; airlines grounded flights. Millions of people were laid off as business disappeared practically overnight. The unemployment rate in America shot up to nearly 15% from about 3.5% in February 2020.
It was the sharpest economic contraction on record.
end quote.
The twin whammies of the pandemic and people retiring and staying home from working at all and Putin's war on Ukraine (likely caused partly by his personal isolation and removal from reality regarding Putin's life) has brought us to here.
The end result of the pandemic and Putin is "Mass starvation of millions of people" especially in the Middle East and in Africa in general. Why?
Because grain from Russia and Ukraine (the breadbasket for the middle East and Africa) isn't being shipped to the Middle East and Africa causing prices to be too high for most people to afford what is available which creates mass starvation of hundreds of millions of people around the world.
The real problem here is that "The Law of Supply and Demand" is in effect all over the earth. So, to some degree the lack of enough grains available in Ukraine and Russia and places like China because of Flooding and the drought in the U.S. and other places is causing mass starvation especially in 3rd world countries all over the world.
The other aspect of "The law of supply and demand" is based completely to a greater or lesser degree on how much of something is available. The less of any item on earth (including grain) causes it to cost much more and this translates directly and indirectly to all countries on earth depending upon how countries legally handle prices of food items worldwide.
For example, some countries offer price supports to certain foods to enable their people's not to starve so much. But, this is only true mostly of the wealthier countries on earth who can afford to do this.
