I was actually surprised to be that long driving through a tunnel even though there probably were 20 to 30 miles of tunnels total. Luckily, we went through the tunnels when the traffic wasn't bad because I wouldn't have wanted to be stuck in a 10 mile long tunnel under a mountain for any length of time. But, people who live in the alps have become really good at digging tunnels because in the end it is much cheaper (in the long than building roads up and down mountains because you destroy the beauty of the mountains with too many roads all over the place. So, it is very efficient on many levels to bore tunnels through the base of mountains.
