I knew many people who were drafted or who came back in pieces (both physically and mentally) so i was incredibly glad (but I also felt Guilty) when I was given a 4F classification which basically means they won't draft you unless the nation is attacked by a foreign power directly. So, i got to go to college unlike my best friend who also went to college to become a Jet engine mechanic so he could become a jet engine mechanic in the Air Force so he wouldn't die as a Grunt on the front lines of the Viet Nam war in a Jungle somewhere.
So, I was lucky in this sense after almost dying of both whooping cough as a 2 year old and a concussion and the resulting seizures for 5 years (by God's Grace) and then my doctor told the draft board I had had seizures from age 10 to 15 years old and this gave me a 4F classification so i didn't even need a 2S classification which was a college student deferment. It's one reason why young American boys went to college and got advanced degrees a lot then and young women went to college to meet these young American boys and then got master's degrees and PHd's too. And it's one reason why there are so many well educated people in the U.S. now because of the Viet Nam War where 50,000 mostly young men my age died then. More people died born my age in 1948 died there than any other age. So, I sort of take this very personally at this point and always did.
So, By God's Grace I survived the Viet Nam war mostly because I almost died from whooping cough at 2 and survived a concussion and seizures at night for around 5 years too.
By God's Grace
