I mostly vote for someone that I think will help our democracy survive (I obviously didn't vote for Trump who might be the death of our democracy).
What was it like to grow up in a Conservative Family? I think the biggest thing in the 1950s was that I was physically safe more than most people. This is likely the biggest thing. What was the biggest drawback?
I would say being sheltered from the realities of the world. On one hand you are safer likely in a Conservative Family growing up especially in the 1950s but the drawback is it is completely unrealistic compared to the lives most people are living in the U.S. and around the world.
So, I think when I noticed the contrast the most is when I went to India in 1985 and 1986. then I saw the suffering of mankind and how it had been this way for thousands of years. I could see just what the world was like in some ways 1000s of years ago when I went to India and I was pretty horrified.
So, ever since then I see we live basically in a Disneyland type of environment here in the U.S. and we are very spoiled whether we are Conservative, Independent or Liberal.
In some ways all points of view are not realistic when you visit countries where the poor are dying in the streets from starvation every day. I saw that a lot in India in 1985 and 1986 then too.
So, I became much more realistic about just how spoiled and unrealistic we tend to be here in the U.S. simply because the poorest homeless person I see on the streets here is much richer than most people I saw in India who were dying on the streets from starvation and exposure while I was there witnessing this.
So, if you really want a more useful perspective about life go to a third world country so you can see just how bad things can really be.
