Recently I was with one of our housecleaners on a beach near where I live and there were sneaker waves about every 7th large wave or so that day. So, you had to be careful of these sneaker waves coming up 100 feet further onto the shore and pulling you out to sea. If you are not from the California coast you might not know what they are and expect all the waves to be the same. But, when there are sneaker waves usually from a storm out to sea somewhere in the Pacific Ocean it might be sunny and perfect where you are so you think everything is fine. However, if you see one wave coming in and almost getting you and almost getting other people around you you need to stand further back from the ocean or you risk being pulled out to sea.
Sometimes walking my dogs on the beach over the years I have almost been pulled out to sea along with my dogs. I can remember one time I was grateful to have the dogs on a leash (more than once) because otherwise one of our two corgis with short legs would have been sucked out to sea. Another time Huxley (now gone) but was a Yellow Labrador even with webs between his toes for swimming so a real water dog was swept out off leash right next to me and I had to run into the surf a ways to save him from being swept out to sea.
So, Sneaker waves when they are happening about every 7th big wave I believe are very dangerous. They are usually the most dangerous if you are on rocks above the beach. It feels safe to be on a big rock off the beach but when sneaker waves are happening you really aren't safe there at all. You need to back way up from the ocean in order to be safe. Look where the sand is wet from the last sneaker wave. Don't look at where the ocean is breaking right now to judge where you will be safe. It will be wet up further from the sneaker waves in the sand. Look for that.
