When we moved into our present house on the coast at Northern California we had already here in this house a large redwood deck which was really nice. However, this was 1999 and even redwood doesn't last forever because at a certain point it starts to sliver more and turn grey in the weather.
So, when we went to replace it we researched how to replace this deck. In order to replace this deck with redwood it would be around 200,000 dollars which is crazy. Also, I live in California and I don't want people to keep cutting down Redwoods really for any reason because there aren't that many of them to begin with and they take a long long time to grow up and get big even if you plant new ones.
So, what we decided to do was to get a Timber Tech plastic wood deck. The good thing about this is that there are never any slivers. The worst thing about plastic wood is that if you go out barefoot onto your deck on a really sunny hot deck you might burn your feet a little from the hot plastic wood.
However, this product is a really good one so you can expect your deck to last 25 to 30 years if you want after you put it in.
Also, this deck cost us around 65,000 dollars instead of 200,000 dollars for the redwood so it is cost effective too without cutting down any more trees redwood or other. So, it is very ecological in this sense.
However, you have to realize that in order for plastic wood to be strong it is very dense and therefore likely somewhat heavier than redwood decking too so your under structure that supports the plastic wood has to be built strong enough too. However, it works for our hot tub which is built into our deck like the older one was too.
So, what I'm saying here is I highly recommend using Timber Tech Plastic wood for a deck so I think you might love having one like this. The color we got was redwood colored too. However, they keep changing somewhat the different shades of plastic wood they create.
Like for example, when a large tree hit our deck and hot tub the Christmas before last from our neighbors yard I wasn't able to get exactly the same redwood color or shading that I originally had installed here. We have had this deck several years now and my only complaint is the deck getting to hot barefoot if the sun is too hot that day. But, the joy for me is no slivers from the redwood if I happen to walk outside barefoot onto my deck here on the coast of Northern California.
