I thought you might like to hear about the 2009 Diesel powered Marine KLR 650

Though I never rode a diesel motorcycle I thought it might be fun some time. It might start harder like diesels tend to and likely the power would be very different than a gasoline powered 4 cycle gasoline engine too. However, what I find amazing is that it was designed for Diesel, Kerosene, and Aviation fuels which are all basic military fuels. Most non-cars are all diesel in the Marines and likely in the Army too.

I did have a 1970s VW Diesel Rabbit which was likely the most gutless vehicle I ever drove even though it got over 50 miles per gallon of diesel. I bought it for my son when his Nissan Pickup truck was totaled in an accident with the insurance money from that crash. What was funny about it was that it was a stick shift with 4 on the floor and that you had to downshift into 3rd gear whenever the upslope was anything above a 1 percent Grade. So, we didn't keep that long because I didn't know about how the oil in those things carbonize and thicken up. So, i realized that there was just so much I didn't know about maintaining a dieself vehicle myself that I decided to sell it.

But, I'm okay renting a diesel Mercedes or other diesel vehicle in Europe when I go there because their use of diesel usually doesn't stink like American diesels often do or did. Things when I have gone to Europe in 1999 and 2009 and 2011 I rented at least one diesel vehicle even in 1999 I rented a Fiat Diesel 6 passenger motor home in Munich and drove it through Germany, Austria, Switzerland all the way to northern Italy  then in 1999. Also, you almost always get much better mileage with any diesel than a gasoline powered car and gas is usually 10 dollars a gallon or likely much more now in most EU nations because of Trump and Netanyahu. So, the economy of renting a diesel in Europe is quite attractive.

AI Overview
Marines KLR650 Diesel / Kerosene / gas model. | Kawasaki KLR ...
The 2009 "marine version" diesel KLR 650—officially designated as the M1030M1—is a highly specialized, military-spec motorcycle. Developed by Hayes Diversified Technologies (HDT), it was engineered for the U.S. Marine Corps to run on diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuels (like JP8) to simplify military logistics and eliminate gasoline from the battlefield.
Key Specifications & Performance
While it utilizes the standard Kawasaki KLR650 chassis, the engine was heavily modified for diesel service.
  • Engine: 584cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder.
  • Power: 28 horsepower.
  • Top Speed: Approximately 85-90 mph.
  • Fuel Economy: Can exceed 90+ MPG on the highway.
  • Multi-Fuel Capability: Can run on standard diesel, biodiesel, kerosene, and even jet fuel.
Civilian Rarity & Sourcing
Only a few hundred of these military-spec diesel bikes were ever produced, making them incredibly rare in the civilian world. When they do pop up at government surplus auctions or on the used market, they demand a massive premium compared to their standard gasoline counterparts.
