First of all, being a vegetarian (even if you were a lacto Ovo Vegetarian more like India then) you were thought to be pretty odd for the 1950s. For example, the first foreign food I ever ate was when I was around 12 which was a tostada which is Mexican food with a crunchy tortilla with beans, and sometimes rice with lettuce and grated cheese then in Beaumont, california while driving to my Dad's best friend's weekend house between Yucca Valley and Landers on the high desert.
So, what else was unusual for the 1950s? I wasn't allowed to wear red or black because red was the color of hate and black was the color of death. I wasn't allowed to eat Onions or Garlic. I was taught to believe in reincarnation while still being a mystical Christian in a New Age Religion. And even though most New Age religions are more progressive politically, this one was the opposite and extremely Conservative and very Republican.
All these things were very unusual for the 1950s (even in Southern California then). So, when the whole flower child movement started to happen in the mid 1960s and people were studying Eastern Religions that believed in reincarnation I had a lot of new friends especially from about age 18 on. I was 21 in 1969 at the height of the whole Flower power Social Revolution then as well.
But, until these changes (outside of being a surfer and street racer with my friends) my life was pretty different.
Like for example, if we went to a restaurant I could order (Baked potato, or a grilled cheese sandwich or a peanut butter Sandwich or a salad or tomato soup or mushroom soup) and that's about it.
So, mostly we didn't go to restaurants unless it was Yogananda's Vegetarian Restaurants in Hollywood or Encinitas ever while I was 5 to 15 years old or more. However, the good part for me is that my parents didn't smoke or drink or have extramarital affairs which meant that they stayed together from 1946 until my father passed away in 1985 which was very good for me because they both were always very good and kind and helpful people and helped me to become like that too.
By God's Grace
