From my personal point of view it is so you can have a conversation with yourself. Yourself writing right now is met by your future self (one day, one week, one year or years later and you meet each other and hopefully you are wiser later than you are now. Hindsight is better than Foresight (some people say). And sometimes I agree with this and sometimes not depending upon the situation.
For example, when my young wife and I were breaking up when I was about 29 and she was maybe 25 and we had been together since she was 21 asked our 3 year old son who he wanted to live with. He said he wanted to live with me (because I didn't beat him up) I found out later. So, I raised my son from age 3 by myself (sometimes my parents helped and then a few years later I married again a lady with 2 kids from her first marriage and we stayed together for 14 years.
The point is: "Was it fair to ask my 3 year old son who he wanted to live with?" My son now 52 says this was the right thing to do because even though he loved his mother he realizes she wasn't grown up enough to actually raise him well anyway. However, this left an emotional hole in him when he didn't see her at all from ages 5 to 10 years old and harmed him in some ways still in his relationships to women in general. However, now, he has been married 3 times like me and has been married about 13 years now with a 12 year old son. So, his life has worked out even though we asked him at 3 whether he wanted to live with me or his mother.
Writing helps us deal with all the decisions we are forced to make in life when we might not want to have to make those decisions. It allows us not to just bury the pain so deep it gives us Cancer or something and then we die.
Hiding from the truth doesn't stop it from potentially killing you if you don't deal with it in some useful way.
So, healing from all the decisions life forces us to make when we don't want to is an important thing we all can do to stay alive into our 70s or even to 100 if we want.
