After the 1600s, Jamestown slowly disappeared as a town.
In 1698, a big fire burned down the local prison and statehouse. The
government decided to move the capital of Virginia to the nearby town of
Middle Plantation (which was renamed Williamsburg) in 1699.
Jamestown
became a quiet farming area and was no longer an active town by the
mid-1700s. Later, during the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers
built a fort there. In the late 1800s, groups began to save and restore
the historic land.
