Emptying out the mind of all useless detritus

Here in the materialistic world of Europe and the U.S. we tend to hold onto every thought both good and bad and stuff it deep into our subconscious where it often festers the rest of our lives until those thoughts kill us eventually.

I think it is a part of the Vipassana meditations to do something like this to empty all the useless stuff out of your mind:

The meditation becomes "Looking for the source of your thoughts" which allows all other thoughts to fly past you into the void and thereby healing your mind of things it no longer needs to contain. This can be very very freeing and often people feel like new people with large amounts of time in this sort of meditation because of all the stuff they no longer needed in their minds gone and they feel much freer and happy from doing this meditation.
