This was always the hardest thing to get used to whenever I flew to Hawaii, especially after I hadn't been there in 1 or more years. It takes some time to get used to the feeling that you are breathing warm water. And if you are in the wrong time of year even getting into the water when it is above 85 or 90 degrees it isn't going to cool you down unless you get out and there is a cool breeze. However, the water is so much colder in the Pacific in Santa Barbara that you don't ever have that problem here (at least yet).

Note:Scripps Pier is in La Jolla near UCSD. It has one of the longest rides in of any surfing beach I've ever seen in California there most times of the year. But, you need powerful waves to bring you all the way in in a beach that stretches out to sea for surfing that far.
