I had never heard of the Gila River as a transportation method for pioneers into California

However, if you took this route in the winter time or late spring or early fall I could see  it could be useful even then. You wouldn't want to travel through Flagstaff in the winter though because it is at around 7000 feet and snows there and also snows around the Grand Canyon too in winter. However, from about Phoenix south the weather generally is pleasant a lot in Fall winter and spring south of Phoenix where the Gila River flows part of the year if there is enough rain.
