There were two places then when I noticed the air pollution that much. They were Bangkok, Thailand which had sort of Brown air and noise pollution from no mufflers on cars or trucks so you would have to wake up to thousands of cars and trucks and motorcycles without mufflers on their exhaust pipes then. we soon went to KoI Samed Island near Bangkok and went snorkeling because we didn't need the noise or brown air then.
Another place I noticed with brown air from burning cow Dung and plastic bottles to cook with then was Bodhgaya while we were there. So, the air smelled like burning cow dung and burning plastic bottles a lot there too.
But, this was about 40 years ago now since we are coming up on 2025 and that was 1985 and 1986 that we were there.
Now I'm told you can no longer see Mt. Everest (or any of the Himalayas) from Kathmandu anymore. So, this is kind of sad when you think of how beautiful that was in the 1980s.
But, in 1985 and 1986 New Delhi at least was relatively okay air wise compared to a lot of other places we visited then in Asia.
