The big deal really is paying off your card every month so you aren't paying interest for the points. The thing with American Express is mostly the people you buy from with it pay the fees so you really aren't paying the fees yourself (at least directly).
So, the more things you buy (like Gasoline for a car especially) the more points you get which you can then use to travel with.
However, it's really important to pay off your bill completely every month to make all this actually work for you long term.
Otherwise, you are going to be paying so much interest on your debt that there is really no point at all in trying to collect points in this way because the points mean nothing if you are having to pay all that interest. If you are paying all the interest on your debt it means you might as well just pay for the tickets directly without trying to get the points.
The other advantage people tend to like about American Express is when they send you your bill you see everything itemized so you don't have to itemize it yourself. So, you will especially see very rich people saving money in this way by having all their expenses itemized monthly and then paying it off monthly and using these points then to fly all over the world so they aren't paying often at all for Airline tickets everywhere.
