In some ways it is like connecting with another human being.
However, remember this being has been underwater its whole life (however it is also true that and Octopus because of its legs can also move through tide pools too where it is very shallow or even in emergencies across somewhat dry land for a few feet in some circumstances. So, for a few minutes they might be okay with their bodies above water for really short periods of times. But, most of the time they are breathing water in order to stay alive.
So, think about yourself breathing water and always being underwater in a different kind of world than you and I normally live in. Also, this Octopus has never been to school and likely had to survive without it's parents too because the eggs I think mostly hatch alone and then have to fend for themselves.
So, family (outside of mating) isn't happening for and Octopus usually.
This would psychologically make for a very different being than any human being you have ever met.
However, an Octopus (if it likes you and you do it no harm) might also make a good pet or friend). Because of it's incredible innate intelligence I think seeing an Octopus as a potential friend once trust is between both of you might be true.
But, just like with people there are many different personalities likely in various Octopus so you need to be careful of how you interact with one and don't take it out of the water it needs to breathe in order to survive because they do have a beak that is hard that they could bite you with in order to defend themselves if they felt endangered too.
So, thinking of an Octopus sort of like an untrained dog or Cat in some ways that lives underwater might be useful so both you and the Octopus survive this encounter if you are in the ocean and not an aquarium like for example, Monterey Bay Aquarium. The last time I was there by the way they had 1 or 2 Giant Pacific Octopuses which are very interesting creatures on display in their own personal Aquariums there.
I think Monterey Bay Aquarium opened around 1984 I believe and Julie Packard who is the Daughter of the Packard in Hewlett Packard put about 60 million dollars into the founding of this Aquarium then in 1984.
