Threats Against ICE are up 10 fold since January

Based on statements from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and media reports in 2025, there has been a dramatic rise in assaults against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, with some officials claiming the number has increased tenfold or more since January
.
Key details on the reported rise in assaults against ICE agents since January 2025:
  • Scale of the increase: While figures have varied, DHS has repeatedly stated that assaults on ICE officers and federal agents conducting immigration enforcement have increased by a very large margin. In July 2025, DHS told Fox News the figure was up nearly 700% compared to the same period in 2024. By late August, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons stated on the record that the increase had surpassed 1,000%.
  • Contrasting figures: Some analysts have put the raw numbers into perspective, noting that the double-digit figures in 2024 were significantly lower than the figures reported in the hundreds by mid-2025. For example, in July, Fox News reported that DHS tallied 79 assault events between January and June 2025, up from 10 during the same period in 2024.
  • Attributed causes: DHS officials and ICE leadership attribute the sharp rise to inflammatory rhetoric and "demonization" of immigration officials by some politicians and media outlets, as well as an increase in the number of enforcement actions.
  • Incidents cited by DHS: Officials have referenced specific incidents to highlight the escalating risks, including an officer being dragged by a car during an arrest in June and a "military-style ambush" in Texas in July.
  • Targeted violence: A fatal shooting at an ICE field office in Dallas on September 24, 2025, further highlighted the threat environment. The FBI is investigating the incident, which resulted in fatalities and injuries, as an act of targeted violence.

Other immigration-related increases since January 2025
  • I-9 inspections: In addition to threats, other ICE activities have also increased significantly. The rate of I-9 Notices of Inspection for workplace enforcement has gone up tenfold compared to the same period in 2024.
  • Immigrant detentions: Immigrant detentions, particularly of individuals with no criminal record, have increased more than tenfold since January 2025, according to a Factchequeado analysis of ICE data.
