Bears in Yosemite National Park in 1985 before we went to India, Nepal and Thailand and Japan

We were psychologically preparing for our 4 month visit to India, nepal, Thailand and Japan when we camped near the trail to California Nevada Falls on the way to climbing up the back side of Half Dome. So, this was the night before we climbed up the wire to Half Dome (the whole family then) all 5 of us from age 10 to 14 to my then wife's age 37 and I the same. anyway the night before the climb we were all in a 5 man tent in sleeping bags and suddenly in the campground we heard screams and things being ripped a part. Then we heard people beating on pans with spoons because bears don't like loud noises because they have very sensitive hearing and smell like dogs. So, they will usually walk away from loud noises of one kind or another.

In the process of this someone had a coleman lantern in the next campsite at about 10 pm at night  so I saw the outline of the bear walking by our tent which didn't feel very good because my whole family was sleeping there. However, we had hung our food on a rope from a tree like you are supposed to in a campground so no one dies from the bears eating their food at night (or any time).

I got up to see if I could help and saw the Cabover Camper on the truck torn in half by the bear with food and people's possessions strewn everywhere around there. I wondered how these people were going to deal with all of this with their cabover camper torn literally in half by this bear?

So, likely the people must have left some food or something that smelled like food in their camper and the bear smelled it an wanted it so tore their cabover Camper in half with stuff strewn about for half a block in every direction by the bear before it left.

It was likely a very hard lesson for the people in the camper and hopefully their insurance covered that mess.
