The weather was really warm in places like Redding and Red Bluff about 80 degrees which is about 3 months to early for these temperatures. This was the most unusual thing as well as temperatures of 55 to 65 or more in the City of Mt. Shasta which is also very unusual for this time of year too.
However, the weather has been really beautiful this week and I went twice up to Castle Lake once with my wife and once with friends and our dog (dog both times). There was ice on Castle lake but not thick enough to walk on and there was one drift of snow at Bunny Flat on Mt. Shasta that was about 25 feet deep. So, if you brought your mountaineering or Cross Country skis you could ski there. One skier had ski boots that looked more like downhill boots but used for mountaineering skis which I though was interesting even though he said a new pair of this kind of mountaineering ski boot new was about 1000 dollars. Boy! everything sure costs more than it did in the 1970s and 1980s when I did most of my mountaineering skiing on Mt. Shasta then when I often lived there between 1974 and 1992 which is the last year I lived there before buying another business in the Greater SF Bay area and moving near the ocean.
Anyway, I got my hair styled in Redding because my wife's and my hair stylist for about 20 years had moved to moved to Redding with her two daughters about 10 years ago now and her daughters are in high school at this point. However, she knows how to cut hair like the 1970s like I like my hair cut which most barbers these days don't know how to do so whenever I can and I'm driving through Redding I try to stop and have her style my hair because she does a really great job.
So, this was a really great trip back to the SF Bay area because the weather was perfect! Not too hot and not too cold and also I could go up into the snow without worrying about snow in town this time too!
However, weather like this can also change on a dime in Mt. Shasta and they expect some snow in Town this weekend. So, we got the best weather imaginable for this time of year in the Mt. Shasta area this time!
We drove up last Saturday and back today Thursday. It was a wonderful break from our life near the ocean to visit old friends that I skied with and hiked with a lot from 1974 to 1992 also.
Also, I try to visit there 3 to 5 times a year for a week each time if I can. However, it is also true that I'm retired and often my health will allow me to still do this.
By God's Grace
