I try to write every day a little to keep my typing and writing skills even though I'm already 77

I attribute part of my long life (especially since age 50) to writing a blog first at geocities.com and later here at blogger.com (blogspot). I moved over here because it was hard programming the geocities site myself. So, when I found that they had an encoder (that automatically programs in HTML or compatible language for you I realized I could do about 10% or less of the work as programming in HTML and write a lot more which is what I actually love to do the most.

When I was young I wrote lyrics a lot for songs I wrote on Guitar and piano and keyboards.

After playing piano and taking lessons from Mildred Hall in Glendale from 1956 until I was 16 in 1964 I was pretty good at playing the piano and sight reading music to because of this. However, I found with this formal training that it was harder to actually write music because formal training and thinking can interfere with being a good song writer in some ways. So, many musical artists play by ear including a good friend of mine who is still a professional musician all these years later and still has a recording studio and still does sound engineering for many professional musicians from all over the world and he still plays music professionally too at a mininum he still does one gig a week or more even at age 74.

I started to write music by playing variations of "Heart and Soul" on the piano and making up new music in the key of C like mostly people play "Heart and Soul". Also, I played violin like my cousin did from age 9 to 14 but since I'm now 6 foot 5 I saw that my hands were too big to be a violinist that was really good. You need smaller deft fingers because there are no frets on a violin like on a guitar or mandolin.

So, I began to write music and lyrics on the piano first and then taught myself nylon string guitar and then bought an electric guitar. I still have a Yamaha pumpkin colored guitar I bought myself for my 25th birthday in Escondido California when I lived in Rancho Bernardo going to college then.

Anyway, writing a little every day at literally any age allows you to keep the ability to write tomorrow. It's sort of like me getting on my treadmill every day and doing a minimum of 5 minutes about as fast as I can walk.

There is a saying: "Use it or lose it" which might be true of everything you do." So, anything you want to keep being able to do you have to keep doing it now as long as you can.

I myself have to sit down at a piano more than I do and restring my Yamaha guitar. But, at least writing I do a little every day to keep this skill ongoing as long as possible into my 90s or 100s if possible.

By God's Grace
