Tibetan is not genealogically derived from Sanskrit, but its written form is heavily modeled after it .

UP until this moment I had believed that Tibetan WAS a Sanskrit based language. My best friend in college at UCLA got his Master's degree there on the History of Buddhism and Sanskrit so he could translate Sanskrit (ancient texts directly) and has a lot over the years. This also has allowed him to speak enough Hindi and Tibetan to have communication better in Tibet and India and in Nepal which is in between India and Tibet while he has visited all these countries over the years. His last visit was with his girlfriend and he about 2 years ago where they both got Covid and Giardia and she was bitten by a pack of wild dogs in Varanasi, India and had to undergo Rabies shots into her stomach. His first time he was playing music professionally in Switzerland and found I and my family were in Nepal in Kathmandu. So, he hopped on a plane and flew through Pakistan from switzerland to Nepal to a hotel where we stored our back packs for trekking into the Himalayas. So, after our two months in India we met him at our I think it was called "The Maha Laxmi hotel in Kathmandu where our trekking back packs were stored for our return to trek into the Himalayas into Helambu region near the Tibetan Border with Nepal. We trekked for about 50 miles with our backpacks eventually up to around 10,000 feet elevation where it snowed on us but luckily we were staying in Tarkey Gyan then inside a Sherpa home because our guide was the owner of the house's nephew then in 1986. We hiked over many Nepali Suspension bridges. However, if you are in a wind be sure to hold the wire railings so you aren't blown off by the gusts of wind thousands of feet below onto the rocks of rivers there.

. Developed in the 7th century to translate Buddhist scriptures, the Tibetan script (an abugida) was designed based on Indian models (specifically Devanagari/Llantana scripts) and adapted to accommodate Sanskrit sounds.
  • Script Origin: The Tibetan alphabet, created by Thonmi Sambhota, is closely related to North Indian scripts, resulting in similar phonetic structures for recording Sanskrit texts.
  • Language Family: Tibetan is a member of the Sino-Tibetan language family (closely related to Burmese and Chinese), not the Indo-European family like Sanskrit.
  • Influences: While grammar, structure, and vocabulary were significantly influenced by, and sometimes modeled on, Sanskrit to facilitate religious translations, the underlying language is distinct.

In summary, the written Tibetan script is Indian/Sanskrit-based, while the spoken language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family.
