It is basically like an old Fashioned Detective Agency, only this agency (worldwide) gathers every bit of information it can sell about everyone without telling them what they are doing. So, it is sort of like the detective at night taking photos of people having affairs and going out on their wives or husbands.
This is how the Internet is financed. For example, it is said that Porn allows the Internet to exist. If so, how is money made in this way. Much porn is free if you go to the right sites on the Internet. But, why is this? Because people are interested in what kind of sex you are interested in. They make a note of what porn videos or pictures you visit. This way they see what you want in life sexually at least. This is information that someone might use to blackmail you or to manipulate you in some way or to categorize you into a database for a country or company worldwide. So, if they ever want to sell you ANYTHING you will notice often that the commercials as you surf the Internet are directly to do with something you bought online or searched for online. So, the Internet wants to know everything it can about you to sell you something or to blackmail you or to sell your information to someone who might hire you so they won't because of some stupid thing you put on facebook when you were 12 or 13 and horny or stupid.
So, the Internet exists primarily to gather information about you and everyone else on earth so they can either sell them something, manipulate them for blackmail or other things.
I know this is cynical but the article is after all about what actually finances the Internet and thinking of the Internet as a Spy or Detective Agency that wants to know the smallest details about you, your wife, your daughter or son or grandmother might be the most useful way to see all this.
So, protect yourself and your children and your grandparents and friends any way you can.
